Formerly a 16th-century abbey — now a boutique oasis with country charm and a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ — the Hotel de l'Abbaye is where tranquility meets style, class and romance, hidden in the heart of Saint Germain-des-Prés.

Welcoming their guests since 1972, the establishment is ideally located on the rue Cassette — a peaceful street in the 6th arrondissement, and previously a lane which inherited its name from the “Hôtel de Cassel”, a noble residence in the end of the XVIth century.

Complementing its own rich history, here you can also experience the French ‘art de vivre’ (‘art of living’) in one of the oldest quarters of Paris, where the brightest minds of the 20th century – including Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Ernest Hemingway and Picasso – once met and mingled down the road at the famous haunts of Café Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore.

The area is also home to a mix of monuments, museums and luxury boutiques, so there’s something for everyone, and only a stone’s throw away.

Those who stay here — in one of the hotel’s 44 rooms and suites — are sure to feel right at home. Each one offers unique comfort and is beautifully decorated with fine fabrics and wallpapers. The four duplex apartments also each have private terraces and are among the most popular in the capital, for good reason.

However, even if you are not staying in this hotel, we definitely recommend you visit, at least once, to check out the opulent and exquisite design of its lounge bar with its wood burning fireplace, comfy overstuffed chairs and antique furnishings – and its beautiful flowered garden.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more unique and relaxing spot in the heart of the capital which allows you to dream in the sunshine and be soothed by the trickling water fountain, away from the excitement of Paris, yet right in the midst of the action.

A rare find indeed.

Perfect for: A gourmet breakfast in the garden. The Hôtel de L'Abbaye offers two breakfast options to get your day started on the right foot: Continental breakfast: €18/person and L'Abbaye breakfast: €23/person.
